How to Plan a Proposal with a Photographer

This is not a guide to planning a trip. It is the part almost nobody explains: how a surprise proposal actually works when a photographer is hidden nearby — the timing, the positioning, the signal, and what happens in the two minutes after the yes. It is the process I run several times a month across Marseille, Provence and the French Riviera.

    1. Fix the hour before you fix the place

Every decision comes after this one. The last hour before sunset gives soft, directional light, warm stone, and viewpoints that have started to empty. Midday in Provence is hard, white light with black shadows under the eyes — the same spot will look like a different place.

I send you the exact sunset time for your date and we set the proposal roughly 45 minutes before it, leaving room for the couple session afterwards while the light is still there.

    2. Pick a spot your photographer already knows

A good proposal spot needs three things at once: a clean background, a hiding distance of 20 to 40 metres, and a natural reason for you to be walking there. Plenty of famous viewpoints fail on the second or third count — too open, too crowded, or impossible to reach without an obvious detour.

Rather than sending me a screenshot from Instagram, tell me the mood you want and where you are staying. My shortlist is in the best places to propose in Provence and the French Riviera.

    3. Agree one discreet signal — and only one

Adjusting your watch. Taking off your sunglasses. Putting your left hand in your pocket. It has to be something you would do anyway, visible from 30 metres, and used only once. It tells me the proposal starts in the next few seconds so my focus is already on you when you kneel.

What does not work: texting me, looking around for me, waving. Any of those tell your partner something is happening before it does.

    4. Arrive naturally, and forget I am there

Have a plausible reason for the walk: a drink at a specific bar, a viewpoint someone recommended, a detour on the way to dinner. Arrive within a ten-minute window of the agreed time — I will be in position well before that, and I will not approach or make eye contact.

One practical detail: keep the ring box in a jacket or trouser pocket rather than a bag, and take it out only at the last second.

    5. Kneel facing the light — and then stay still

If you can, position yourselves so the sun is behind or beside your partner rather than behind you. I will have chosen the angle so this happens naturally on the way in.

After the yes, do not immediately turn away or start walking. Stay where you are for a minute: the embrace, the ring going on, the reaction, the first laugh. Those frames are usually the ones people print.

    6. What happens after the yes

I walk over, introduce myself, and explain what just happened — this is the moment most partners realise the whole thing was planned. Then we take 30 to 45 minutes of relaxed portraits on the same spot: walking, talking, a few close frames of the ring and the hands. No poses that feel like poses.

Your gallery is retouched and delivered within 48 hours, so you can share it with family before you fly home.

    7. Always have a plan B

The mistral can make a cliff viewpoint unpleasant, and a coach can empty onto a village belvedere three minutes before you arrive. We agree on a second spot and, when the trip allows, a second slot the following evening at the same hour. In four years of proposal work this has never left anyone without their photographs.
