1. Malmousque & the Corniche, Marseille
A small rocky inlet ten minutes from the city centre, with the Frioul islands on the horizon. It is my most-used proposal spot: easy to reach on foot, quiet in the last hour before sunset, and the light comes straight off the water. Kneel on the flat rocks below the path; I shoot from the terrace above.

2. Calanque de Sormiou & Sugiton
White limestone, pine trees and turquoise water. The viewpoint above Sugiton needs a 40-minute walk, which makes the surprise easy to justify — you are simply going for a hike. Best from September to June; access is restricted on high fire-risk days in summer, so we always keep a coastal alternative.

3. Cap Canaille & the Cassis harbour
Europe's highest sea cliff, and a red-rock road with viewpoints every few hundred metres. Late afternoon light hits the cliff face and turns it copper. Down in the harbour, the pastel façades work well for the walk afterwards, and there is a table for the celebration.

4. Gordes & the Luberon villages
The classic Provence postcard: a stone village stacked on a cliff, best at the belvedere on the road in. Go 45 minutes before sunset, when the coaches have left. Combine with the Sénanque abbey valley in June and July if you want lavender in frame.

5. Aix-en-Provence — fountains, plane trees and bastide gardens
For couples who prefer a town setting to a cliff. The Cours Mirabeau, the Mazarin quarter and the bastide gardens give shade, warm stone and a discreet crowd. It also works in winter, when coastal spots are windy.

6. The French Riviera — Rayol-Canadel to Saint-Tropez
Umbrella pines leaning over the water, red schist and long amber sunsets. Rayol-Canadel and the Domaine du Rayol gardens are quieter than Saint-Tropez and photograph better. Travel fee applies from Marseille; we usually pair it with a longer couple session.

7. Gorges du Verdon & Moustiers-Sainte-Marie
The most dramatic option: a thousand-metre canyon over green water, and a village hanging from a cliff. Two hours from Marseille, so it works best if you are already staying inland. Wind picks up in the afternoon — we aim for the last 40 minutes of light on the belvederes.

Choosing Between Them
If you are staying in Marseille and want it simple, take Malmousque. If you want the image everyone recognises as Provence, take Gordes. If you want water and drama and you can walk, take the Calanques. If you are on the coast east of Toulon, stay there — the Riviera light is worth it.
Whatever you pick, the hour matters more than the place: the last hour before sunset, every time. Read how to plan a proposal with a photographer for the timing, the signal and the backup plan.
